Guilty Crush

Was flicking through a magazine the other day and had one of those double take moments when your brain says-- 'hold on a minute, who was that deeply attractive bloke back there?' Flicked back, and realised with a little frisson of shame and pleasure that the picture I'd seen was the poster for the film Withnail And I, and the man in question was Richard E Grant.

It flies in the face of logic, but there's something about him in that role that does things to me. Maybe it's because I watched it (repeatedly) at an impressionable stage in my development, in my first term at University when I lived with a girl who was a great fan of the film (and many of the recreational activities therein) or maybe it's simply his cheekbones and that fab coat he wears. Or the fact that he exudes the kind of despair that brings out my latent need to heal and nurture (In theory. In reality this need is so latent as to be completely imperceptible, as my husband will testify whenever he has a cold.) I don't know, but whatever it is he makes me want to strip off, drink heavily and behave very badly indeed

Can someone please be very kind and own up to a secret passion for Russell Brand or Gordon Brown, just to make make me feel better please?

Richard E Grant in the Scarlet Pimpernel is IRRESISTIBLE. When I first saw it, I was like, why would they make the hero someone not very attractive? And then he smiled. It was one of those cheeky, intimate, private joke kinds of smiles and I was sold.

Of course with Withnail and I you also have Paul McGann - another guilty crush. :-)

I can admit to a not-so-secret crush on Antonio Banderas and Robert Plant :o)

Or how about an unexpected one? In North and South, of course Richard Armitage is gorgeous. But the guy who snagged my attention was the one who played Higgins (Brendan Coyle). I could see him as several Hardy heroes (and I mean Thomas as well as moi).

Russell Brand, though... noooo. I'd rather go down the pub with Jo Brand. It'd be a much more fun evening.

Donna, you've mentioned that film before and I STILL haven't watched it. What am I like? It's another thing for the growing 'When This Book Is Finished...' list.

Paul McGann is quite sweet, isn't he? I always get him mixed up with his brothers, of whom there are many. Haven't seen any of them in a while though.

Oh Kate-- your Antonio crush doesn't count because it's too healthy and normal. Robert Plant is a bit more left of centre though, and I'm going to have to google Brendan Coyle. I'd hate to miss out on something yummy...

Withnail and I is great. Personally I prefer Paul McGann in it, but Richard E Grant is brill.
Richard E Grant in the Scarlet Pimpernel is a MUST. He is absolutely to die for.

Philip Glenister as Gene Hunt was unexpected but then I did need a lived in hero.
I know who Brendan Coyle is and he is a good man, solid and dependable. He was in Lark Rise to Candleford as the father.

And with Gordon Brown, I suspect his wife loves him...The porr man is blind in one eye from a rugby accident.

Russell Brand is not the hottest looking guy, but he's really funny so that makes him attractive.

India you're on your own there, along with your blood fetish. I have not one embarrassing crush. I can hold my head up high. (Until someone I know comes along and reveals I used to have a poster of MacGyver on my bedroom ceiling.)

I've not seen Withnail and I, but I've added it to my Netflix Queue. My secret crush is Johnny Depp. Yummy!

Kate H - I thought Brendan Coyle was fantastic.

I have a secret crush as well and it's Steve Carrell (from the US "the Office" and the new Get Smart).

ARe you kidding??? I adore Russell Brand. And I've never kept it a secret. The man's a genius, in so many ways.

Have to admit though I preferred Paul McGann in Withnail and I, but Richard E did make me howl with laughter... Does that count??

Michelle, was Philip Glenister your Simon Clare hero? If so I LOVE him.

Jane and Heidi-- I know, I can't watch him without feeling a little tingle of 'mmmm' about him. It's because he gives the impression of being absolutely up for anything I think. And Heidi, howling with laughter can be a good thing, although obviously not all the time. That could be hurtful...

Trenda, Johnny has to go on the 'Being female and alive, of course I have a crush on...' list. The Guilty Crush list is the dark and slightly bizarre side. Spill!!

Donna, I looked up Brendan Coyle and of course now I know exactly who he is and yes, I'd agree, although like Michelle says, quite solid and dependable and not quite rough enough round the edges for me. Steve Carell I don't know, which means a little research is in order...

Jane-- if you catch this, I have a Double Decker waiting to be posted out to you. I thought I had your address, but now I'm not sure. Could you contact me via the website with it? Thanks honey!
