The North Wind doth Blow...

I’m over at iheartpresents at the moment, and if you’ve nipped over here from there you might be looking for this post in which I pondered the serious matter of hero material for Powerful Italian Penniless Housekeeper. (I probably should point out that in the end MPW didn’t get the job.)

Yesterday we had snow – several inches, as soft and white as angels’ feathers that meant the Big School closed and the kitchen was filled with hulking adolescents, red-cheeked and steaming gently as they drank gallons of hot chocolate between snowball fights. This morning, letting Ruby the airhead cat out, I am very relieved to see that no more has fallen in the night so school will be open for business again and I can get back to work. But blimey, is it cold. The air has a metallic sting to it that feels like it has come straight from Siberia and everything is hard and glistening in a way that is so much more sinister than yesterday’s voluptuous softness. It makes me want to make rice pudding, and other calorific comfort foods.

Take care out there, everyone.

Oh you are lucky tht your school is open.
My lot's school is closed as the roads are icy even though the snow has stopped falling. Ultimately it comes down to the bus companies...

I had the joyful news this morning that ours are closed. So thankful not to have to drive in this!

Take care in the vile white stuff. (And rice pudding sounds lovely. Lots of nutmeg.)

(Don't talk food to me. I'm a Very Bad Influence!)

Our schools are shut for the second day and He is also stuck at home because his site is deemed too treacherous to enter!(did overhear him saying something to a colleague about the waitress service at home not being too bad--grrr.

The rabbit will give me that grumpy look when I take his hutch blankie off but the children are of course loving all this. Today we will venture out Bear Grylls style to fetch bread. And red wine.

Stay cosy!

Lots of love,

Rach.

I think you East coast ladies have it much worse than us on this side of the Pennines. The main roads here are OK (it being a major salt producing area) but the lanes around the primary school are like glass.

Ooh Rach, Bear Grylls. I wouldn't mind being snowed in with him (and some red wine and a rice pudding.)

Daughter #3 took Muffin the rabbit out in the snow yesterday and he was completely perplexed by it. He is exceptionally stupid though. (At least he didn't eat huge quantities of it like Ruby the airhead.)

India, don't talk it up! We have about 4 inches, and I don't want any more...

Ah Bear Gryllis. Now he does have potential. Luckily my youngest loves his programmes...
Bear Gryllis has also got him eating porridge (best food for a Boy Scout type) and thinking about hygene. He got the Bear Gryllis Boy Scout survival guide for Christmas...
We have about 18 inches lying on the ground. And the dogs eat huge quantities of the stuff. The kittens are far more sensible and snuggle close to the fire.

Today walked across a crisp snowfileld which glistened as if someone had sprinkled it with a million tiny diamonds....
And then I made organic carrot and tarrogon soup (now where's my halo?!)x

Kate, I'm keeping an eye on your bit of the weather forecast and my fingers crossed. Hopefully you might be getting back to normal next week if no more snow comes your way? (But alas, the ice is even worse... I wonder how long it'll be before we start to see the back of that?)

Michelle, I'm reassured to hear that Ruby the airhead cat isn't the only animal to think snow is a delicacy, though can't help thinking your kittens have a much more sensible attitude.

The boy scout book sounds very good - perhaps I should get it for daughter #1 who is one of only a handful of girl scouts? Instead she got an improving volume called 'The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens' in her stocking, though I've yet to see any evidence that she's looked through it.

Sharon, what a wholesome life you lead! I used up an ancient and very unpromising-looking swede in some soup yesterday and felt very virtuous. Shame I then felt compelled to finish off half a bar of Christmas Toblerone. xx
